Glass Plates

Some years ago my wife Karen started collecting glass plate negatives, finding them in junk shops and latterly in auctions. A handful grew into around a thousand or so which I am gradually scanning, gently restoring when needed and adding to the collection. This is obviously a time consuming process so I expect to be working on this for a very long time.

Many of the plates are from press archives and are in a poor state, probably from being processed in a rush and perhaps not being fully washed so the images could be rushed to print and so make a deadline. Some have extended captions which have been taken from the original typewritten notes that accompany the plates and provide a fascinating window to the past.

If you wish to you use one or more of these images I would carry out a sympathetic restoration before distribution.

MAKING HIM AIR MINDED. YOUNGEST VISITOR. Luckiest visitor to the Northolt Aerodrome, Middlesex, for the first public rehearsal of the Empire Day programme - which took place in pouring rain - was 19-months-old Donald, son of leading Aircraftsman Batistoni. Donald was allowed to look over the cockpit of a Gloster Gladiator, one of the R.A.F's best fighters. SPEEDBOAT "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA" HELPED TO DESIGN SEEN FOR THE FIRST TIME AT SLOUGH TO ATTACK WORLD RECORD. A new kind of speedboat, designed by Mr. Edward Spurr and the late Colonel T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), and intended for an attempt on the world land speed record, who has seen for the first time when it was christened by Lord Strabolgi in the shed in which it was secretly built at Slough, Bucks. The craft, which is dedicated to Lawrence of Arabia, is 16ft long, 6ft in the beam and is powered by a one-and-a-half litre supercharged engine. It is a single-seater totally enclosed and th steering wheel has to be removed before the pilot can enter. The boat was named "Empire Day". LONDON'S FIRST POLICE DOGS "REPORT FOR DUTY" AT PECKHAM. The first two Labrador retriever dogs which are to accompany London police,en on lonely beats are now officially "on the strength" and are at Peckham Police Station, S.E.
